Statue Greek Question
Why was it important to humanize greek gods in statue form?
Example, the great sculptor Praxiteles’s statue of Hermes and infant Dionysus was able to capture the interaction between adult and child although they were greek gods. he was able to humanize them, why was that imporant to humanzie greek gods?
thanks everyone who as answered my question, all these comments are helpful…keep them coming
Rendering gods in the form of humans allowed those who were not educated and even those who were to get a handle of these concepts. If you were told that Zeus made thunder and lightning – and you could see a representation in solid marble, that you could touch and walk around, this made it far more “concrete” for you to understand than to try and relate an idea like electromagnetism.
Even today, what is a movie star? The manifestation of someone that we “live through”. We experience their trials and tribulations without the cost.
I’m not explaining this very well.
Some ideas and concepts are beyond comprehension. Isn’t it easier to put things into a form that “all” peoples can relate to. Say for example a very big man. Bigger than anyone we ever knew. Able to through lightning bolts – for example. This guy is never around unless he’s out to cause trouble – but in the form of a statue we can bow to it, point to it, and pull it down (e.g. Saddam Hussien). Also it gives the local artist something to do.
I may not have done a good job answering that question.
where can I buy a rain oil lamp?
I am trying to find a place (online) where I can buy one of those rain oil lamps, they are usually made of gold plastic, and there is a greek lady statue in the middle, and fish line, you put mineral oil in the lamp and it trickles down and looks like rain. They were popular in the 70′s and 80′s and I bought one for my mom back in the late nineties, but I have been searching forever, and can’t find anywhere that sells them NEW (not ebay) online. If anyone knows of an online store please let me know. thanks.
I went to EBay and found about 6 that are in the listings. Prices range from about 12 to 30. Just bid and hope for the best.
