Sculpting Clay Question
how do you make sculpting clay soft again?
i boght some clay that is hard and the lady said i can make it soft agin but i do not know how?
For plasticine: The cooler temperatures make it hard. So warm it up in your hands.
For stoneware, terracotta, sculpture clays: When I have a 25 pound bag of very stiff or dried out clay, I cut small holes in the bottom of the bag, without compromising the bag, and place the bag of clay in a large bucket (like a 5 gallon bucket). I put the bag so the holes are on the bottom. Then I add water to the level of an inch. The clay will slowly soak up the water. It will take time depending on how dry the clay is and you may need to add more water. The bag will help keep the clay together.
If it is totally dry and in chunks, then you can slake it down in a bucket of water until it is a slip. You’ll need to siphon off the excess water on top until you have a thick slip that you can scoop out onto a plaster wedging table. The plaster will draw out more water and eventually the clay will be dry enough to wedge up. This method is a lot of work.
Where can I buy clay (to make a tree) in NC? Like, a lot of clay.?
I want to make a tree like this using clay: http://rickcarlsen.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2006/tree.jpg
where can I buy clay so that I can sculpt a tree of that size?
Michaels? AC Moore? AC Hardware?? help!!!!!!
No, not those. You go to a ceramics/pottery supply place where you can buy it by the ton, or hundred pound bag, dry or already mixed. Since you don’t know this, you may not also know that you will have to make the tree hollow for it to dry properly and you had better have a large kiln available before you start. Otherwise, plaster may be a better choice – from the same kind of place.
I went to Google Maps and put in Raleigh NC and then did Search Nearby for “ceramic supply” and this entry was B

Directly using that Category might lead you to other place (or in other cities) – you will have to wade past places that want to install your ceramic tile or sell you decorative pots.
If they don’t sell clay in bulk, ask who does. You might also ask at the University art department.
