Home Sweet Creative Home In Wood Paneling
Wood paneling is a wall constructed from rigid or semi-rigid components, which are traditionally interlocking wood but it, could be also plastic or other materials.
Wood paneling is used in architecture and design, ornamental treatment of the walls, ceilings, doors, and furnishings that consist of a sequence of broad, thin sheets called panels that were framed together by smaller, thicker strips of wood. It was developed in antiquity to make rooms in stone buildings to look more comfortable. The panels work to insulate the room from the cold stone.

Wainscot is a paneling design used to the lower 900mm to 1500mm of an interior wall, underneath the decorative rail on the wall or chair and above the skirting board or baseboard.
This style is traditionally created from tongue and groove boards though bead board or decorative panel such as wooden door might have is also common. Wainscot is also referring to other materials used in similar fashion. Its original purpose was to cover the lower parts of the walls in which in houses constructed with poor or nonexistent damp proof courses are often affected by rising dampness but now it general purpose is for decorative use. Boiserie is the term used to define ornate and intricately carved wood paneling.
Some early examples of boiserie were unpainted but later the raised moldings were painted or gilded. Boiserie is popular during the 17th and 18th century French interior design and Palace of Versailles has many fine examples. Wood panels were not just confined to the walls of the room but were also used to decorate doors, frames, cupboards and shelves. Wood paneling has been popular for hundreds of years ago and indeed it a natural wood adds warmth and elegance but the only way the craftsmen of earlier were able to apply wood paneling was in frames or what they called wainscoting.
Now, wood paneling became so popular that it is used in homes everywhere, in the kitchen, dining room, living room and bedroom. Today, wood paneling in homes have a lighter and sleeker look. Those people who buy or own older homes with dark paneled rooms may be faced with the decision of keeping the paneling as in, removing or changing it and the easiest and most cost effective way to change the look of a paneled room is to add color by painting the paneling.
The wood paneling is often passed over as a quality building material. The images of the inexpensive imitation composite paneling the gained fame and fortune during the last half of the 20th century tend to dominate not to knock the cheaper alternative. Carved Wood Wall Question
Any ideas for decorating a very long ledge in my master bedroom?
The ceiling is high and also angles down and the ledge is on the higher end. It is above the door and wide closet which are off-white, and there is 3 inch plain molding(also off-white) on the edge of the ledge. The room is painted in a warm taupe and the style is Old Worldish with dark woods including an old French style ceiling fan with carved dark wood and antique amber glass. The room doesn’t get a lot of light which is why I’ve kept the door, closet and trim off-white to balance the dark woods. I don’t really want a vignette type arrangement or silk/real plants, but something more architectural to add to the Old World feel without looking ‘staged’ or ‘crafty’. I’ve considered large metal scroll wall art but wonder how that would look against all the white trim, etc…Any suggestions pics or links would be appreciated. Thanks.
To increase the amount of light in the room and set a romantic, old world mood, some hidden lighting at the back of the ledge would be a good start. Then purchase some fancy openwork cement block squares from the garden center and place three at each end of the ledge….two stacked on top of each other closest to the wall and one high next to it, forming a step like arrangement on each end of the ledge as a way of creating a frame. Even though you said you didn’t want plants, one nestled next to one of the “steps” and cascading over the edge of the ledge would create an old world terrace look. No more would need to be added to give added dimension to the room.
prevent wood carving from splitting?
I recently spent some time in Cuba on vacation, and bought some wonderful mahogany wood carvings from a local artist. The carvings are meant to hang on the wall, so the front is varnished, but the back of the carving is not. I returned less than a week ago and already cracks in the wood are beginning to form, from what I’ve read online this is from the drastic change in humidity (Cuba is humid, Winnipeg in winter is most definitely not). What can I do to prevent further damage, and is there anything I can do to fix the damage that has already occurred?
Dampen the wood. The cracks should close. Then cover the entire thing with varnish.
