One ounce of fimo clay – After you buy the clay, cut an ounce of it. Then, roll it between your palms to make a long and thin piece. What you will be trying to do is to remove air in the clay. You will know that your fimo is good for use once you pull the rolls apart and it is does not cut easily.

Toasting the clay slabs – When buying any type of fimo polymer clay, always find out if its toxic. Even so, it is good to note that baking non-toxic clay could be risky due to fumes. Make sure that the room where you keep the oven has proper ventilation. Normally, you have to bake fimo clay with a temperature range of 250 degrees F minimum and a maximum of 275 degree F. You should never ignore the directions for baking the clay you purchase. Mostly, the clay has to bake for about thirty minutes.

Sculpting With Sculpey Question

Food-safe Sculpting Clay?

I’m designing my kitchen to be robot themed. To make it work, I want to craft a number of robot items such as salt and pepper shakers, a spoon rest, napkin holders, soap dish, etc.

However, my normal medium, Sculpey, is decidedly NOT food-safe. Although it may work for some items, it wouldn’t be safe for stuff such as the shakers or anything that will come in contact with food.

I’m looking for another type of sculpting clay that is easy to obtain and use, but safe for foodstuff. I’d be willing to paint if it only comes in clay colored (although then I’d need food-safe paint). Any sculptors know?
As far as food-safe, the package and every sculpting website I can find ’bout it says that it isn’t. Since I’m not so keen on seeing how many times I have to use the salt shaker before I get “thyriod issues” or “increased weight loss”, I’m going to stick with the safety info.

hi, i have been doing pottery for 4 years now and i think to get what you want you can do a drawn design on how you want it made and how you want it to look and then find a pottery club and ask if any one there can make it for you then you can get one popularly fired through a bisque kiln and then glazed the colours you want tthoughta glaze firing. and if you had your heart set on making it your self then you can take a adults course, oh and yes this will make it food safe. feel free to contact me through email because i love talking clay and would love to help as much as i can.
